Geschwind

Bierkreek Nursery, in collaboration with many other rose lovers around the worlds, is assembling a unique collection of the roses of Geschwind. Rudolf Geschwind (1829-1910) was a Hungarian Forestry Expert. He left his passion for roses for future generations in the form one of the must unique collections of roses ever created.

Because he was a Forester he looked for different qualities in his roses than more “traditional” rose breeders may have. Color, fragrance, growth habit, the bloom and health were all combined in the various rose breeding crosses he made during his lifetime. He was a pioneer in the search for a rose “as strong and healthy as a lilac”.

The many wars and political troubles almost caused his entire collection of roses to be lost. The presentation of the Geschwind roses in the gardens at Castle Hex is unique. It allows the gene bank of this special group of roses to be preserved for future generations of roses and rose breeders.
