Workshops
Pruning
During the workshop you will learn the best methods to prune various types of roses. Then you will put that knowledge directly into practice so you can learn it “hands on!” In addition to technique good tools are very important. We will show you different tools and give you demonstrations on how they work and how to properly use them. Our tools are supplied by The Wiltfang. Additionally we will take some time to explain how to properly maintain your pruning shears.
If you want to come with a private group we can certainly accommodate you. Biekreek will also do pruning workshops “on location” such as in your own garden. This way you can have your own garden expertly pruned while hosting a workshop for your friends at your home. Please contact us for prices for pruning workshops hosted in your own garden – or other location.
Pruning workshops are generally in March; during pruning season. Please see our activities calendar for details.
Some roses are best pruned in the fall. We offer a workshop to teach you which roses they are and how best to prune them. Please contact us for prices on our fall pruning workshop.
Creating Arrangements with Rose Hips
In the autumn many roses stand out because of their beautiful rose hips. Big, small, bottle-shaped, orange, red or black, borne in bunches or alone; they provide additional fall interest to the garden. Hips are not only delicious and healthy for birds and other animals they are also very decorative – and not just on the rose bush! In the autumn we do workshop where we demonstrate how you can turn rose hips into beautiful arrangements. These workshops take place in September and October. Please consult our calendar for dates. Additionally, like the pruning workshops we can offer them on request.
Propagation
Summer is the time to propagate and thereby increase the number of roses. We demonstrate how this is done by grafting or budding roses. A small piece of the desired rose variety is grafted on to a wild rootstock. Once the demonstration is over we encourage you to try this for yourself. The workshop costs 45 euro, lasts the entire day and refreshments are included. There is a five person minimum for our propagation workshop. A budding knife is included in the price. And you can take home the roses you bud during the workshop!
Organic Gardening Workshop
We use no pesticides at Bierkreek and we can show you how you can do the same in your garden. Instead of reaching for the sprayer and chemical bottle, you will learn what the natural enemies of pests like aphids are plus the type of environment they need to thrive. From there you will learn how to keep nature in balance in your garden. Believe it or not, having some aphids in your garden is actually healthy for roses! And that is balance. If you wish to learn to control your “pests” without pesticides this is the workshop for you!
